Documents setting forth the precise details
of these transactions cannot now be traced but it appears
from certain old papers in possession of the Military
Authorities that the Colonial Government was reimbursed by
the War Department for sums spent on the acquisition of
the leases of the above lots. It is to be observed,
however, that except in the case of Block G, no payment
of Crown Rent, either capitalised or annual, has been
received by the Colonial Government in respect of these
leasehold lots since their use was acquired by the War
Department.

The whole cantonment area was dealt with by
Colonel Lewis in 1905 as follows:-
"THE CANTONMENT.
Between Queen's Road and Kennedy Road.
The larger portion of this, amounting to
64 acres is agreed to be Freehold War Department
Property. It was acquired from time to time for
military purposes and its limits and extent were
definitely fixed in 1853. There are no title deeds.
A large part of the remainder is held by the

War Department on leasehold of 999 years.
